It is known that Indians have been in Florida for 20,000 years according to a quote from a past curator of the Indian Temple Mound Museum in Fort Walton Beach. Based upon artifacts reported from a site on the shore of Choctawhatchee Bay beside “Grassy Pond”, the site was apparently occupied during at least two periods: initially from circa 1,000 to 500 B.C. and then again from circa A.D. 500 to A.D.1,000. It is reported that the CCC blocked off lakes, bayous and other small water ways that fed Choctawhatchee Bay, Fl. James Plew and Clifford Meigs came from Chicago, Il. They hunted and fished here. Helped to establish Eglin Air Force Base.
The Association was formed by 25 families. Some of these families were Bruce & Roma Shipley, Mike & Paulann Carrucci, David & Donna Krahenbuhl, Dave & Dorothy Mets. First street signs were built and erected by members. (Original signs are on rafters in the Beach Park pavilion). Cleared / started Beach Park. Free fill sand brought in from pools & construction sites. Operated food booth at Mullet Festivals to raise money for project. Association obtained clear title & ownership of parks.
Split rail fence & water added to Beach Park by the labor of members.
Signs for Raintree & Olde Post Entrances, electricity, wells, sprinklers, plants, trees added. The Woods Park field was dedicated to Ben Jurgens. 1st Raintree Estates phone directory was written and distributed. Raised money for Woods (interior park) with raffles. Cleared walking path around interior park. Drainage on Olde Post improved by county through association voice.
Cleared the area for the Woods Park Ballfield. St Patrick Day Walk was held. Donated plants and money for Norwich Circle entrances.
Sprinkler system, well, & electricity added to Woods Park. Area seeded. Signs erected. Sea wall put in Beach Park. Organized fundraising. All rip-rap put into place by members. Construction of picnic tables and benches for Beach Park done by members.
White Point Rd. walking trail cleared & made accessible. E-mail system developed. Both entrances: railroad ties were replaced & new railroad ties added by members. Professional soccer goal added to Woods Park field by member raised matching funds. Informed Raintree residents of Eglin’s solicitation comments on widening White Point or alternative route for Mid- Bay bridge access. Drainage on Olde Post (to bay) again reworked by county through Association’s voice. Hurricane clean-up and repair.
Drainage on Hampton & West Hampton reworked by county through Association voice. Started new roof for Beach Park pavilion. Rip rap added to sea wall & new roof on pavilion done, add picnic tables in Parks. After years of coordination with other White Point neighborhood associations & government county agencies, sidewalks were installed along White Point Rd. & curbing was moved back to median at entrances.
Added trees, plants & landscaped Norwich Circle & Ardmore Ct. entrances. Filled erosion in Woods Park Ball Field, fixed irrigation pumps, seeded ball field. Painted benches & signs in Woods Park, Painted benches. Added more riprap to sea wall in Beach Park, repaired Beach Park entry road. Started Garden in the Woods. Cleared Ardmore Ct entry path into Woods Park. Paved road into Beach Park. Raintree face book developed.
Pier completed and open for members use. Dedicated Tierny Pier. Added paved parking in Beach Park. Painted entrance signs. Trimmed bushes, plants and cleaned up entrances. All volunteer help. Little Library was installed in Woods Park. Garden in the Woods extended and improved. Completed riprap on sea wall in Beach Park. Replaced soccer net. Little Library installed in Beach Park. Dedicated Beach Park to Spence King. Hurricane Sally damaged sea wall and pier and picnic tables were fixed.
Fixed sea wall, pier, picnic tables. Repaired irrigation pumps at entrance and Beach Park, & back flow valve. Neighbors donated 3 sets of chairs with tables installed by Bay in Beach Park. Erosion control plants were installed near sea wall in Beach Park. Painted benches. New, donated sod was installed by volunteers in Beach Park. Planted 300+ trees. Woods Clean- up day trimmed overhanging tree limbs.
Since 1980 Raintree Association has been dedicated to continuous improvement of Raintree Estates. This includes maintenance of main entrances (Raintree & Olde Post) & both Association parks (The Woods Park and The Beach Park). In addition, the Association hosts social events, clean-up days, biannual yard sales & is a voice for Raintree & much more.
